Narendra Modi to Be Sworn in for Third Term as Prime Minister on June 8


According to media reports, Narendra Modi is set to be sworn in as India's Prime Minister for a third term on June 8. The new cabinet is also expected to take the oath on the same day.

Following the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll results, the Union cabinet, chaired by Modi, recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha on June 5. The current term is set to end on June 16.

Sources from ANI indicate that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU), potential "kingmakers" in this election, have approved the formation of the NDA government. They are expected to submit formal letters of support to the BJP, paving the way for the swearing-in ceremony on June 8.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the BJP secured 240 seats. Despite falling short of a majority, the NDA, with its alliances, has a total of 295 seats. The opposition INDIA bloc secured 231 seats, posing a significant challenge to the BJP-led NDA, contrary to exit poll predictions.

The BJP's 2024 tally is notably lower than its previous counts of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014. Meanwhile, Congress saw substantial growth, winning 99 seats, compared to 52 in 2019 and 44 in 2014.

For the first time since coming to power in 2014, the BJP did not secure a majority on its own, falling 32 seats short of the 272 majority mark.

Today, the NDA is set to meet to strategize future political actions. The meeting will take place at Prime Minister Modi's residence at 3:30 pm.

On June 4, PM Modi expressed his gratitude to the public for their mandate, stating that the BJP-led NDA will form its third successive government. He emphasized that this victory is a testament to the resolve for a developed India, the principle of 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas' (together with all, development for all), and the strong faith in India's Constitution.

"On this sacred day, it is confirmed that the NDA is forming the government for the third time. We are grateful to the people for their full faith in the BJP and NDA. This is the victory of the world's largest democracy and the strong faith in India's Constitution. It is the victory of the resolve for a developed India and 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas'," Modi stated in his address at the BJP headquarters.
